A copy of The City of the Lakehead Act, issued 5 June, 1969, by Minister of Municipal Affairs Darcy McKeough. This act effectively created the City of Thunder Bay by amalgamating the former cities of Fort William and Port Arthur.

Under the provisions of subsection 4 of section 3 of the City of the Lakehead Act, 1968-69, IT IS ORDERED

1. A vote of the electors of the city to determine the name of the city shall be taken at the same time as the election for the final council.

2. The following names are designated as those from among which a vote of the electors shall be taken to determine which name the city shall bear.

3. The Order made the 8th day of May, 1969, filed in the office of the Registrar of Regulations on the 8th day of May, 1969, as Ontario Regulation 178/69 as amended by Order made the 27th day of May, 1969, filed in the Office of the Registrar of Regulations on the 27th day of May, 1969, as Ontario Regulation 208/69, applies mulalis munlandis to the taking of this vote under this Order.

4. The clerk of the City of Fort William shall within 48 hours of the poll certify and send to the Minister of Municipal Affairs the result of the voting.

No mater what happens on that day, it will be a day of disrespect. If Evangelist burn the Quran or if Muslims riot and kill Christians, it will show how little either side respects the other’s tenets. But who is to blame? Muslims for how many years of intolerance towards any other religion, Christians for a history of trying to defeat Islam at its source? Does it matter? Not to those who have been caught in the death and destruction over the last 1200 years. Not to the people who go about their daily lives in so many countries with the expectation that they will still be alive at the end of the day, but who unfortunately never make it home.

I don’t disagree with the Evangelists intentions. I do disagree with burning ANY book though. Perhaps there is a better way to prove their point. Perhaps not. Nothing else would even come close to enraging Muslims like burning their most important document. They think nothing of burning another countries flag or burning someone in effigy. So why shouldn’t Terry Jones do to them what hurts them the most?

Somehow each side needs to start respecting the others beliefs. Live and let live. Emphasis on the live part. Do the Muslims really have to build a mosque a few blocks from ground zero? Would an enclave of Christians be able to build a church in Mecca or Messina? Or anywhere in the Muslim world? Not likely. So until they are able to tolerate our religion why should we hold back with our protests?

We are not going to see tolerance this week. We will see people die. Probably at the hands of extremists. Islamic extremists. I don’t believe the parishioners at the Gainesville’s Dove World Outreach Centre will be on the streets killing innocent Muslims. But someone will be on the streets this weekend in many countries around the world. If I was a Christian, or just an American, i wouldn’t be on the streets this weekend.

2D bar codes, once scanned, can provide anything from information about a product to a link to a web site or video. From what I’ve seen so far, anything seems to be possible. Currently I’m using it to download apps from my computer screen to my phone with one simple scan. The phone’s camera is used as the optics and the information is run through the Scanlife program running on the phone.  The program interprets the information imbedded in the bar code and instructs you on what to do – open a browser, start a video or it just presents information.

I see unlimited use for these bar codes. A salesman could put one on his business card, providing a link to his company’s website or to a video promoting a product. A bar code on a prescription bottle could provide additional information regarding the drug your doctor has prescribed. An advertiser in a magazine could provide a list of stores in your area that carry their product.  A 2D bar code could be used on an ID tag or security pass to verify someones identity. If printed like postage stamps and stuck on, they could be changed daily.  And why not stick one on a child’s clothing, to be scanned by police if he becomes lost? Product user manuals could be accessed by scanning a bar code. Every single phone with a camera and a data plan or wi-fi is capable of handling this newest “gadget”.

I look forward to seeing more 2D bar codes, I see this a no brainer for companies to get their information out there. If I had anything important to link to, I have a bar code on this blog.

He had originally been declared a dangerous offender in 2005, but the Supreme Court of Canada reversed that ruling in 2007. Why? The judge had taken eleven months to write his decision, too long according to the Supreme Court. I can only assume that the judge did not realize he was in a race. By 2005, Teskey had a total of 38 convictions, almost one for every year of his life. But his inability to perform as a normal person in society did not seem to matter to the Supreme Court. A tardy report was more important.

What can we deduce from this legal case? Well, for one, in Canada, the threshold for becoming a dangerous offender is 38 convictions, including shooting a policeman. Not 37 offenses – 38. For another, all you judges out there make sure you write your verdict in under eleven months. For goodness sake, do not ponder your decision, but write with haste to ensure a timely sentencing of the guilty.

Why does it take 38 offenses? Did the justice system figure Teskey was just having a few bad days? That he would see the light and become a good person after, say, a dozen convictions, two dozen? Three dozen!! Does the word “unbelievable” come to mind when reading about this guy? I don’t mean that he’s unbelievable, it’s the Supreme Court that is unbelievable. Our justice system was created to protect citizens. For the 40 years of Teskey’s life it failed miserably. How many lives were affected? How many lives were changed forever? We all know the answer is too many. Why does it take the justice system so long to see what every one of those victims saw the instant they crossed paths with Teskey?

It is truly unfortunate that our Supreme Court Justices are not elected in Canada.

To all those families and their friends and relatives who have suffered needlessly because of Teskey’s, I am truly sorry that the Canadian justice system failed you all so spectacularly. And to Leo Teskey, may you slowly rot to death in your prison cell.

So here is someone’s view of the world today, minus any sensitivity some people might expect. I would love to take credit for this but sadly I cannot.

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threat
and have raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon,
though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A
Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940
when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorised from
“Tiresome” to a “Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a
“Bloody Nuisance” warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

The Scots raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the
Bastards” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have
been used on the frontline in the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror
alert level from “Run” to “Hide”. The only two higher levels in France are
“Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire
that destroyed France ‘s white flag factory, effectively paralysing the
country’s military capability.

It’s not only the French who are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has
increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate
Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations”
and “Change Sides.”

The Germans also increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to
“Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher
levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose”.

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the only
threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels .

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy.
These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy
can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Americans meanwhile are carrying out pre-emptive strikes, on all of their
allies, just in case.

New Zealand has also raised its security levels – from “baaa” to “BAAAA!”.
Due to continuing defence cutbacks (the air force being a squadron of spotty
teenagers flying paper aeroplanes and the navy some toy boats in the Prime
Minister’s bath), New Zealand only has one more level of escalation, which
is “Shit, I hope Australia will come and rescue us”.

Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to
“She’ll be right, mate”. Two more escalation levels remain, “Crikey!’, “I
think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend” and “The barbie is
cancelled”. So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final
escalation level.

Canadians are holding a public enquiry on the matter, have hired federal teams
of bilingual grief counsellors and are controlling the situation through pieces
of carefully-worded legislation.

If this upset your sensibilities, too bad. Its a cruel world out there and if it wasn’t for certain political or religious groups we would be able to do without this kind of humour. So suck it up people, and keep an eye on your neighbour because you never know where you’ll find a terrorist.

All Allah Airlines would have no security restrictions at all. You can bring anything you like onboard, including bombs, guns, knives and even that coffee you bought before you got to the ticket counter. On AAA you wouldn’t even need a ticket. In fact, I’m pretty sure we could take up a collection from the Christians and Jews to cover all the costs.

You may think this idea is crazy. You may think this idea is discriminatory. You may even think this idea is great. You would be right on all points. And in this absurd world that we live in, it may just be what we need.

There is no doubt in my mind that the Muslim extremist who are prone to pull off these terrorists acts wouldn’t hesitate to do this to us. Death to the infidel! Allahu Akbar!  I am glad that my God doesn’t ask me to kill non-believers.

As Canadians prepare to celebrate our national holiday, few will realize that they are also celebrating a dirty bit of political chicanery. It all began at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 9th, 1982.

The House of Commons met in afternoon session, and only one item was on the agenda: Bill C-201, a private member’s bill to change the name of the July 1 holiday from “Dominion Day” to “Canada Day.”

Fewer than 12 members of the 282 members of the House show up for work, which presents a procedural problem because a quorum of at least 20 members is required to conduct business. Officially, no bills can be passed. Nevertheless, Bill C-201 is given second  and third reading. The time is 4:05 p.m. Our hard working representatives call it a day.

What transpired in those five minutes nearly 20 years ago was a contempt of Parliament, but nobody cared. When the error was brought to the attention of Speaker Jeanne Sauve the following Monday, she said no procedural rules had been broken because nobody called for a quorum count. A quorum was deemed to exist, thus making the actions of the House  lawful.

Leaving aside this feeble technicality, Opposition members objected that they were not properly forewarned of the bill’s second reading. “Today – July 12 – I received notice advising that Bill C-201….wouldn’t be before the House during private members’ hour on Friday last, July 9″ said Alberta Tory MP Gordon Taylor. “The notice said the second reading would be resumed, but the notice has not yet been posted on the members’ bulletin board.”

Yvon Pinard, the French-Canadian president of the Privy Council, claimed that the list of bills to be debated was distributed to Opposition parties on July 8, but what he then said disproves the notion that he cared at all about Parliamentary procedure:

“We – the government – had hoped the bill would be passed during one of our very late nights, but unfortunately members present at the time were not yet mature enough; now a few days later, it seems a miracle has happened and we have the results at last”.

Translation – “We wanted to ram this change through without fuss, but we didn’t get away with it. So we cheated.”

Thanks to this “miraculous act of maturity,” Canadians now celebrate a vapid, contrivance instead of a historically meaningful event.

July 1 commemorates the day in 1867 when New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and the Province of Canada formed “One Dominion under the mane of Canada,” as described in the British North America Act. In fact, the idea of a “dominion” was a uniquely Canadian achievement.

The term came from New Brunswick Senator Samual Leonard Tilley. who took it from the eighth verse of the 72nd Psalm: “He shall have dominion from sea to sea and from the rivers unto the ends of the Earth.” The passage may be biblical, but the meaning for Canada is clearly secular.

Dominion Day became the official name of our national holiday after B.C. Senator Robert William Weir Carrall presented a bill to Parliament in 1879. In his 1926 report, Lord Balfour declared Canada (as well as other Commonwealth nations) to be self-governing dominions within the British Empire constitutionally equal to each other in all respects, and united in common allegiance to the Crown.

The Balfour Report led directly to the December 11, 1931 Statute of Westminster, by which Britain invested Canada and other dominions with full legal freedom.

“Dominion Day” embodies the essence of Canadian nationhood, and is associated with nation-building events. It was as the Dominion of Canada that this country that this country came of age and fought in the Boer Was and two world wars.

“Canada Day” celebrates nothing except our institutionalized contempt for our nation’s history. You won’t find Americans celebrating “U.S.Day” instead of Independence Day, or the French celebrating “France Day” instead of Bastille Day.”

These people are proud of their history. Canadians are no different.

Taylor described the proceedings of July 9, 1982, as “sneaky, sloppy and arrogant.” What self-respecting Canadian could argue?

My copy of this editorial was published in the Chronicle-Journal in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Dominion of Canada.

I speak to this issue as a Canadian, thankful to have been born in this country fifty plus years ago and to have witnessed amazing parts of not only our country’s history, but world history, thankful for our freedom and thankful for our civility. But I am also speaking as a Canadian who has witnessed some absolutely unexceptional and uninspiring politicians. Our society, as great as it is, and our country, as awe inspiring as it is, can’t seem to produce politicians to match. Why?

During election campaigns, promises are made and platforms are built, paths are mapped out and strategies planned. Great performances are promised and expected. But once in office, once the politician sees the framework that he has to work within, undoubtedly they rise to a level of mediocrity only seen since the last guy to hold that office. Why do these people figure that our pattern of democratic politics can be changed by stepping inside the framework? Neither Mr. Harper nor Mr. Ignatieff have the ability, opportunity, tools or understanding to change this pattern. It is the structure of democracy, the never ending need for compromise, for uninspiring goals and ordinary results, that needs to change. The time when a leader was allowed to imprint his beliefs, his personality on a country is only a distant memory ,in not only our country, but in most current democracies. Is that why the United States has been so taken in by Mr. Obama? A man who’s vision of change is the most exciting in decades? Don’t misunderstand me, I am all for our freedom to choose, but please, give us someone to vote for.

It has been nearly a century since the fall of the monarchies in Europe and Asia, with some exceptions of course. These were replaced by either dictatorships, in various disguises, or by democracy and its brother, capitalism.  Recent history has shown us both the highs and lows of these frameworks and what their results can be. I’m not advocating a return to a monarchy, but I think we need a change in the way we expect governments to work, in the laws that they must follow, and in the results we must live with. A change that isn’t just another compromise. A change that benefits and defines our society. One ability that separates us from other animals is our ability to reason. Are we wasting that ability by always seeming to drive to the middle of the road? I certainly don’t have the answers, but I don’t get the feeling that our politicians have them either, nor are they even looking for them.

So my first question is, why have we not blown these people off the face of the earth? Perhaps a bit strong, but you get my drift. And my second question is, why are we allowing Muslims into Canada from countries that either directly support these terrorist or who are not actively fighting against them? This is a great big world with lots of good people in it and we should be as picky as hell regarding who we let in. And just to make my position clear, if these were radical Christians, Jews or Buddhists, I wouldn’t want them in here either.

And that brings me to the second article (Campus Radicals by Rachel Mendleson). This is about right-wing activist and radicals that are becoming popular groups on American campuses. And by right-wing we’re talking about White Pride, Aryan nation and Nazi kind of crap. These guys with swastikas tattooed on their heads are running around organizing hate groups.  We all know what happened the last time society ignored these types of radicals. Did we not learn from that?

If I was to form a group called Christians Crusaders Against Radical Terrorists and held meetings and rallies on campuses and in parks in Canada, I would probably go to jail. Most certainly I would be charged with some kind of human rights violation (right Mark Steyn?) and be ostracized by other Christians.  If I started to bomb Mosques and White Pride meeting places, I would be hunted down for sure. My family, friends and neighbours would certainly try to stop me because terrorism is WRONG and as Christians we know that. But why are the families, friends and neighbours of the Muslim terrorist, who supposedly do not represent true Islam, not stopping them? Doing nothing to prevent this terrorism from amongst their own ranks  is as shameful as doing it themselves.

I love my country, I love our form of government despite it’s shortcomings, I love the freedom that we have, even though “human rights” tribunals are slowly eroding that freedom (right Mark Steyn), and I love our religion. Canada is a nation built on Christianity. That was who our forefathers were, and it is those Christian principles and ideals that have made Canada a great nation. If some world citizen wants to come here for the better life that we offer, then be prepared to live in a predominantly Christian society. But if you want to live where your religion is primary, then stay home. We don’t need you and we don’t want you, and I know that I speak for the majority of  Canadians when I say this. Multiculturalism and the way it is forced upon us is not as accepted as our government officials would like to think it is. And to all of you non-Christians working in Canada, what will you be doing during Easter and Christmas? When your employer closes for these Christian holidays will you be staying home as well? Think about it. Think about how good you’ve got it living here. Free health care, education, government social programs, and more freedoms for men AND women than you could ever have imagined in your home country.

Lets not loose this way of life. Stand proud as both a Christian and a Canadian.
